Embrace the darkness: evening activities
Rockbridge County after sunset

The fun doesn’t end when the sun goes down in Rockbridge County. With stargazing, a ghost walk, axe throwing, and more, evenings can offer some of the most entertaining experiences during your visit.

Join the ghost tour

If the stories are true, the ghosts of a dog, a horse, and numerous former residents linger in the historic homes and narrow alleyways of downtown Lexington. Local entertainer Mark Cline – look for the man in the top hat – will likely be your guide on the city’s popular Haunting Tales ghost tour. You’ll learn a lot of history too!

Throw an axe

Axe-throwing has hurtled into Buena Vista. For a few hours of pioneer-style stress relief on a Friday or Saturday night, grab a few friends then head to Axe Warehouse to throw axes at a wooden target. Open until 11pm.

Stargaze at Natural Bridge

Check out constellations, meteors, and the Milky Way from the Skyline Trail at Natural Bridge State Park, which was named an International Dark Sky Park in 2021. From early April through late October, take a self-guided dark sky tour on Tuesday nights. Check the park’s online calendar for ranger-led stargazing talks.

Watch a movie at the drive-in

The double features at Hull’s Drive-In kick off after the sun goes down. Stake out your spot, unfurl your blanket, buy popcorn and a soda at the concession stand then settle in beside your car to watch the latest blockbusters on the big outdoor screen.

Play old school arcade games

Pinball wizards are welcome until 10pm at Tommy’s Arcade in downtown Lexington on Friday and Saturday nights. Games include Pac-Man, Guitar Hero, House of the Dead 2, and Ultimate Mortal Combat 3. Game play is charged by the hour.

Watch a play or live performance

The Lenfest Center for the Arts at W&L hosts plays, concerts, and dance performances during the academic year. Check the online calendar to see what’s on tap. Plays are performed four times per year at Chandler Hall at Southern Virginia University.

Natural Bridge State Park
Natural Bridge State Park, dedicated on September 24, 2016, is home to the 215-foot tall Natural Bridge, a limestone gorge carved out by Cedar Creek. The park is more than just the bridge, however. Beautiful forests and rolling meadows showcase the area’s karst terrain. Surrounding mountains and the James River valley display nature’s splendor. The park was named an International Dark Sky Park in 2021, which means stargazing here is top-notch. Check the park calendar for stargazing events. Natural Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark in 1988.
