Lex Reservoir, Moore’s Creek Trail
The Moore’s Creek Trail and Lexington Reservoir are actually part of Moore’s Creek State Forest in Rockbridge County. This area is known for its beautiful views and also the frequent presence of wildlife, in particular black bear, turkey, deer, birds, fish, owls, and more! The Moore’s Creek Trail is a beautiful trail that leads you to the Lexington Reservoir, but there are also lots of trails throughout Moore’s Creek State Forest that are worth exploring.

DIRECTIONS
From downtown Lexington, follow Route 11 south for just a little bit before taking a right onto Thornhill Road at the intersection of the Lexington Fire Department. Continue to follow Thornhill Road (Route 251) until bearing left onto Route 677 at the intersection of Route 251 and Route 677. Continue following Route 677, which will subsequently turn into Route 612. Turn right when you see the Lexington Reservoir sign. After about a mile, park near the gate, walk down the road 2/10 of a mile, and turn right at the “fishing access” sign.
DESCRIPTION
This is a beautiful hike that offers you the potential to explore the forest and its wildlife, but it also has a bit of history to take note of. The Lexington Reservoir used to be the city’s water supply, so it can be really interesting to see this area’s history and progression.
TIPS
No permit is required to walk through Moore’s Creek State Forest but note that a permit is required in order to hunt, fish, trap, ride mountain bikes, or ride horses. The Lexington Reservoir is a great local spot for fishing and should be checked out if that’s what you’re into, but make sure to acquire a permit beforehand!

This trail and the rest of Moore’s Creek State Forest are not located directly near a town, but there is certainly some stuff in the nearby area to check out if you have the time. North of Moore’s Creek State Forest is Collierstown and Lake Robertson, both of which are beautiful spots we recommend you check out.
